Why We Need to Remember Padilla v. Kentucky This Week
As we join with allies across the country during the current COVID-19 public health crisis, demanding the release of incarcerated people as a moral imperative, this week we also recognize the ten year anniversary of Padilla v. Kentucky. The case was a landmark decision that has had a profound impact on the rights of immigrants in the criminal legal system. It is an integral piece in broader movements led by those who have borne the brunt of our unjust criminal and immigration systems that call on us to do more and be bolder in service of their rights, particularly at a time when incarceration in any form can mean a death sentence. We invite you to mark this anniversary with us, by reading this series of blogs from attorneys who have been at the forefront of these legal fights as they reflect on this decision, the role of federal courts, and what it means to us, our clients and our communities.
